What do I do if I cannot sort sections that cover only part of another section?

How resolve the ‘Sort Error: Cannot sort sections that cover only part of another section’ that occurs when I am trying to sort the Notes to the Financial Statements? 

  Answer:


The notes to the financial statements cannot be sorted if the notes have been customized by inserting additional tables, notes and sub-notes.

It is advised that the Notes to the Financial Statements first be sorted before any customization is done to prevent the error from occurring.

If you have however already customized the notes and the above Sort Error occurs, then the following options are available:
  1. Follow the steps provided in this FAQ document (However it is not guaranteed that this FAQ will work 100% of the time).
  2. If the first option does not occur, you may select to follow one the 2 options are available below:
    • Perform a Copy Components of the financial statements from the main template.
    • Continue working on the financial statements without sorting them.

Steps to follow:

  1. Go to the Control Page
  2. Above the Control Page is a note ‘Depreciation, amortization and impairments’

  1. Enter Design Mode
  2. Select the label that covers the heading of the ‘Depreciation, amortization and impairments’ note

  1. Right-click on the label and select ‘Modify’

  1. A ‘Section’ dialogue will appear
  2. Under Properties select ‘Sorting’
  3. In the Sorting section un-tick ‘Enable sorting of sections’
  4. Click on ‘OK’

  1. You will now be able to sort the Notes to the Financial Statements
