FAQ

What to do when receiving an Error # -200 when launching a database file (.DBF)?

Published:  12/12/2016
Caseware Working Papers is unable to launch a database file (.DBF), how do I resolve this?

  Answer:

If Caseware Working Papers is unable to launch a database file (.DBF), either the file is not a true data file or its header has become damaged.

If there is a recent backup available, follow these steps:

  • Note the name of the damaged file in the error message.
  • Browse to the client file backup location in Windows Explorer.
  • Copy the “…**.dbf” file that was named in the error message.
  • Browse to the damaged file location in Windows Explorer and delete the damaged file named in the error message | Paste in the backup file and rename the backup file to match the original file’s name.
  • Delete all “*.cdx” files and open the file in Caseware Working Papers.
  • If a new error pops up with another “…**.dbf” file listed – Repeat steps (1)-(5).

If there is no recent backup available, follow these steps:

  • Note the name of the damaged file in the error message.
  • Browse for the template that the file is based on – The default location is: “C:\Program Files\Caseware\Templates”.
  • Copy the “…**.dbf” file that was named in the error message.
  • Browse to the damaged file location in Windows Explorer and delete the damaged file named in the error message | Paste in the template file and rename the template file to match the original file’s name.
  • Delete all “*.cdx” files and open the file in Caseware Working Papers.
  • If a new error pops up with another “…**.dbf” file listed – Repeat steps (1)-(5).
